Nothing is as important to us as the personal appointment. While this is especially true in business it is exceedingly important in our personal lives too. Yet, there is little or almost no attention offered to people who actually want to make an appointment.
As a model and actress, Karen Jolly, a co-founder of Appointment Journal, found herself quietly frustrated. For some time, she had struggled with balancing her professional schedule while successfully creating her personal appointments. Eventually, all the quiet frustration Karen had been feeling came to a head with her hairdresser. In her own words...
I had set an appointment with my hair stylist six weeks in advance, so when I quickly flew into the salon, I was taken aback when no one greeted me upon my arrival, as my stylist regularly did.. Perplexingly, after a rather long wait that I could not afford, my hair stylist did turn up... and asked with concern 'what are you doing here?' After I patiently explained that I was here to have my hair cut, she checked the calendar and said, 'We don't have you down for an appointment.' Oh no, I responded and then the receptionist chimed in innocently asking me 'do you have your appointment card?'
Unfortunately, I didn't because I threw it away after entering the appointment into my Blackberry phone. My appointment wasn't found in their books anywhere, so, to be perfectly honest, I felt like the whole incident was my fault.
Until...
The exact situation occurred again, only this time, I thought ahead and kept my appointment card. My hair stylist and also the owner were shocked to realize that a staff member never actually set up the appointment- the error was clearly not mine. Although they acknowledged the error was theirs, my stylist still could not get me in and to make matters worse, I was about to go into a crucial audition without getting my hair done! My future employment prospects may have been affected by their mistakes. Needless to say, that salon lost my business. In fact, I never went back."
